Securing Chennai’s Water Future

The 400 MLD seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant at Perur is a major water infrastructure project supporting Chennai’s long-term water security. The project will provide an additional source of reliable drinking water while reducing reliance on conventional water resources that are vulnerable to seasonal fluctuations and drought.

SJ Group is providing project management consultancy services across the project lifecycle, from design and tender preparation through construction and implementation. The scope includes detailed engineering design, environmental and social impact assessments, hydraulic and network modelling, geotechnical investigations, GIS-based mapping, tender documentation and bid evaluation.

During construction, SJ Group supports construction supervision, contract administration, quality assurance and control, environmental and social safeguard compliance, stakeholder engagement, progress monitoring, risk management, testing and commissioning.

The project comprises four contract packages, including the 400 MLD desalination plant at Perur, pumping stations and reservoirs, a 59 km product water conveyance pipeline to Porur New WDS, and improvements to the existing distribution system in Chennai.

Together, these components will strengthen the reliability of Chennai’s water supply and support the city’s continued growth and resilience to future water shortages.

The outcome

The 400 MLD SWRO desalination plant will provide Chennai with an additional reliable source of drinking water, strengthening water security and resilience while supporting the needs of a growing population.

Turning the limitless potential of the sea into a sustainable source of life, securing Chennai’s water future for generations to come.
