Enabling Australia’s Clean Energy Transition

Snowy 2.0 is the next generation of the iconic Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, designed to enhance the resilience and flexibility of Australia’s energy network as renewable energy generation continues to grow. By functioning as a large-scale pumped hydro storage system, the project stores excess renewable energy and rapidly dispatches electricity when demand is highest, strengthening the reliability of the Australian National Electricity Market.

SMEC has supported the project from feasibility through design development and delivery, providing technical advisory services, geotechnical expertise and engineering support across one of Australia’s most complex infrastructure projects. Working within the remote alpine environment of Kosciuszko National Park, our specialists developed an innovative Geotechnical Baseline Report that established a balanced approach to geotechnical risk allocation, helping improve contract certainty while supporting efficient project delivery.

Once complete, Snowy 2.0 will provide 2,000 MW of dispatchable renewable power and approximately 350,000 MWh of large-scale energy storage. Beyond expanding renewable generation capacity, the project establishes critical infrastructure that improves energy security, supports decarbonisation and provides greater flexibility for Australia’s evolving electricity system.

The outcome

Supporting Australia’s transition to a low-carbon future through large-scale renewable energy storage, while introducing innovative approaches to geotechnical risk management for complex underground infrastructure projects.
