SJ Group wins at SGBC-BCA Leadership in Sustainability Awards 2022
SJ Group has been recognised for our stewardship in driving sustainable building design and operations at the Singapore Green Building Council – Building and Construction Authority Leadership in Sustainability Awards 2022.
SJ Group was awarded Building Project Leadership in Sustainability (Carbon Performance) for our design of NUS School of Design & Environment (SDE) 4, Singapore’s first new-build net-zero energy building and the first university building in the world to be awarded a WELL GOLD certification.
As a hub for the test-bedding of green building technology, the sustainable design of NUS SDE4 defines a new standard for energy efficient buildings. Its large overhanging roof and double facades on the east and west sides shade the building from the sun’s heat and provide a cooler interior. Interiors are designed to maximise ventilation and natural lighting. An innovative hybrid cooling system reduces energy consumption significantly by ensuring that rooms are not overly cooled while ensuring the optimal thermal comfort for occupants. Over 1,200 solar photovoltaic panels installed on the roof generate surplus energy within the building’s own footprint to sustain its energy requirements.
SJ Group, in collaboration with Serie+Multiply Consultants and Transsolar Klima Engineering, was the lead consultant for the architecture, engineering and environmentally sustainable design for the project.

Praveen Hassan Chandrasekar, Head of SJ Group’s Sustainability & Resiliency Office, was also recognised at the SGBC-BCA Awards, receiving the Professional Leadership in Sustainability Award. The award recognises his contributions in helping SJ Group achieve EP100, a global corporate initiative bringing together businesses committed to energy efficiency, and his leadership in developing MiDAS, the world’s first design tool for assessing maintainability of design in buildings. As Head, Sustainability & Resilience Office at SJ Group, Praveen is responsible for driving various sustainability initiatives and integrating sustainability strategies for major projects such as the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB), SJ Campus, PSA Liveable City, Bedok Food City, strategic data centre projects and many more.
Praveen said, “Sustainability is at the heart of all our decision making at SJ Group. The biennial SGBC-BCA Leadership in Sustainability Awards honour significant achievements by individuals, organisations and project teams in the development of a green and sustainable built environment. The 2022 edition of the awards saw 20 winners receiving their trophies from Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Ms Grace Fu at the awards ceremony.
